Ally McCoist shuts down Steven Gerrard Rangers exit talk but adds Tottenham link caveat

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has played down talk of Steven Gerrard leaving Ibrox for Tottenham.

Following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, the 40-year-old has been installed as one of the favourites for the Spurs job.

Gerrard has impressed with Rangers, lifting the Premiership title this season and despite disappointment in the cup competitions this term is being touted with a move south of the border.

The Liverpool legend's name was brought up once again with the vacant hot seat on talkSPORT following the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Watford striker and pundit Troy Deeney believed the boss would be the right fit for the hot seat.

He said: “For Tottenham, (there) is a manager who is doing it and developing players at Rangers. Maybe that could be the chance that Stevie Gerrard deserves?"

McCoist remained adamant that the Ibrox gaffer would stay at the club.

However, he admits the Premiership winner would have a big decision if the London giants came calling.

McCoist responded: “It’s inevitable that when you get success it comes with that kind of problem.

"I think Stevie would, and I’d be very hopeful, that Stevie would stay at least for another couple of years.

“However, you’re right Troy, if somebody like Spurs comes along you have got a decision to make.”
