Ally McCoist 'shattered' by Marius Zaliukas death as former Rangers boss pays heartfelt tribute

Former Rangers boss Ally McCoist is "shattered" after learning of the tragic death of Marius Zaliukas.

The Hearts legend passed away at the age of just 36, with the news breaking as his old club took on Hibs in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

While Zaliukas will always be most remembered for his time at Tynecastle, where he won the Scottish Cup as captain, he did also play 28 games for Rangers in the 2014-15 season.

And the man who took him to Ibrox paid an emotional tribute after Hearts reached the final with a 2-1 extra-time win.

McCoist said on Premier Sports: "I'm absolutely shattered.

"I just can't believe it's happened. A young man, 36, I think his wife just had a baby early on in the year there.

"We're here enjoying a game of football but that just hits home. It's absolutely tragic, tragic news.

"We're all genuinely upset and our thoughts are obviously with his wife and family."

BBC Scotland's Michael Stewart played alongside Zaliukas at Hearts and he also paid tribute after the match.

A visibly emotional Stewart said: "First of all I just want to pass on condolences to Marius' family and everybody that's played with him.

"He was a really, really nice guy. It's absolutely tragic, 36 years old.

"No doubt it puts a different slant on things for the guys when they get back into the changing room and find out about it.

"Jim Jefferies is back there, he worked with Marius. Gary Locke.

"It's shocking when something like that happens."
