Ally McCoist reveals how 'top-class red wine' gave him worst pain of his life

Ally McCoist has told how he suffered the worst pain of his life after “rich foods and top-class red wine” gave him gout.

The former Rangers and Scotland striker and Ibrox manager got the condition in his big toe, leaving it so painful he couldn’t even bear for his bed sheets to touch it.

Ally, 57, said: “I had gout on my big toe. You would not want that on your worst enemy. It was agony. It was one of the sorest things I have ever had in my life.

“It was from potentially not looking after myself, there’s an element of that in it – rich foods and top-class red wine.

“It’s amazing. You’re lying in bed and the sheets are agony on your toe. Work that one out.

“Nothing can touch it. It’s agony. So eventually you’ve got to lie in bed with your foot hanging out the bed with that big, throbbing red toe.”

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on Talksport, Ally added: “It
just went away but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. There is no pain like it.”

Gout is caused by acid crystals forming in the blood and lodging themselves in a part of the body, often the big toe. People joke about the condition, which is linked to over-indulgence, but it’s notoriously painful.

Famous sufferers include Henry VIII, Leonardo Da Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton and Queen Victoria.

Ally loves wine so much that he’s set up a wine business with a pal. Alistair McCoist & Jeff East (Vintners) Ltd is involved in the “manufacture of wine from grape”, “wholesale of wine,
beer, spirits and other alcoholic beverages”, plus “retail sale of beverages in specialised stores”.

His brush with gout was not his only painful recent experience. He revealed earlier this year that he fell off a boat and hit his head on rocks while on holiday on the Algarve with his wife and kids. He said he was “stone cold sober” at the time.
