Ally McCoist reveals hilarious Rangers pre-match 'chips' offer that saw him dropped from Ibrox squad

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has revealed the hilarious moment he found out he was dropped for a game just hours before kick-off.

The Ibrox hero might be the club's record goalscorer and was vital to Graeme Souness and Walter Smith's team during the Nine In A Row period of the 1990s.

But it didn't earn him any special treatment from his gaffer when it came to naming the team for games.

Smith didn't always name the team the day before the game and sometimes would leave the squad stewing over who was being picked until an hour before the game kicked off.

On one occasion, McCoist found out he was dropped from a game purely on the basis of the pre-match meal he was getting.

The former Rangers boss turned up at Ibrox and was about to grab his food when he got a message from assistant manager Archie Knox that he could go a bit unhealthy that day.

And that's when it clicked that he wasn't going to be playing.

He left fellow talkSPORT hosts Laura Woods and Darren Bent in stitches as he told them: "Sometimes Walter Smith would name the team at 2pm and sometimes he’d give it to us on a Friday.

"This day we were in for the pre-match meal at Ibrox and the team hadn’t been read out.

"Archie Knox comes in and shouts on me saying ‘Coisty’ and I said: “What is it Archie?”

"He said ‘You can have chips with your pre-match meal today’.

"In other words, you’re not playing.

"That was me informed I was dropped. Chips with my pre-match."
