Ally McCoist reveals Frank Lampard and Rangers subplot that's captured his imagination

Ally McCoist admits the renewal of an old rivalry is one of the reasons he fancies Frank Lampard for the Rangers job.

Former Ibrox star Gio van Bronckhorst is the frontrunner to replace Steven Gerrard but Lampard was also a potential candidate.

As two of the best midfielders in Europe, comparisons between Gerrard and Lampard were constant throughout their playing careers - especially while they jostled for a spot in the same England team.

And McCoist says the chance for the Chelsea legend to outdo his old Liverpool rival at Rangers is a subplot that's captured his imagination.

"I need to tell you right now, that's one of the reasons I quite like it," he said on talkSPORT.

"Frank will not want Steven to have done a better job than him. So, straight away, I quite enjoy the competition with Frank coming in."

McCoist also reiterated his belief that whoever takes the vacant post is walking into a huge opportunity at Rangers.

He added: "It's a great job. You're sitting top of the league, you're in the semi-final of the cup coming up at the weekend.

"And, if you win your next home game in Europe, you're just about going to get second place in that group.

"To continue that is a little bit of a gamble but, at the same time, what an attractive job."
