Ally McCoist 'Rangers are back' boast as he reveals celebratory phone call with Walter Smith

Jubilant Ally McCoist believes Rangers' Scottish Premiership achievement is as big as any title-winning campaign he featured in himself as he proclaimed the Ibrox side as "back".

The former Gers forward was on punditry duty for West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United in a bore goalless draw on Amazon Prime when Celtic failed to find the net against Dundee United - handing the club their first title in a decade.

McCoist told how he went through his phonebook to celebrate with Ibrox heroes past and present while driving back home, including former manager Walter Smith.

And as the Rangers faithful partied in Glasgow city centre, McCoist admitted he was excited by the rest of the campaign as he mapped out how Steven Gerrard could make this season even more historic.

"It's very difficult to compare (best titles) but having been there and watched everything and seen the transformation of the side and the club coming back, it's certainly as big an achievement that I can ever remember and put my finger on," he told talkSPORT.

"I was obviously on the phone to a lot of people last night coming up the road. I spoke to wee Durrant, Kenny McDowall, and obviously I had a long chat with Walter Smith.

"I would guess you'd agree that Walter would know probably as much, if not more, about Rangers than anyone else and we were of the opinion it was certainly the most important title that we can remember.

"It's significance is the fact that Rangers are now back, as I said last night, the season isn't finished yet - there's still six games to go in the season.

"We've still to play Celtic twice and we still have a Europa League tie with Slavia Prague.

"In terms of the challenge, it was always one of the major challenges was always being champions of your own country and that has been achieved.

"And that's why I think it's as big a win as I can remember."
