Ally McCoist says Aaron Wan-Bissaka's defensive ability means he should be in the England squad for this summer's Euros.
The right-back has enjoyed a solid season at Manchester United but has still gained criticism from some due to his inconsistent contributions in attack, despite two goals and two assists in the Premier League this season.
England have a wealth of options to choose from at right-back, with Gareth Southgate favouring the likes of Chelsea's Reece James and Atletico Madrid's Kieran Tripper over Wan-Bissaka in his most recent international squad.
The 23-year-old also faces competition from Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold for a spot in the squad.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist argued that, out of all of England's options at right-back, Wan-Bissaka's skills in defence mean he would be the perfect option for matches against teams that are strong in attack.
He said: "The one I'd be taking is Wan-Bissaka and I'll tell you why.
"I don't care what anyone says but if England get to the semi-final or wherever it may be and play France, who do you want on the right-hand side against Mbappe? The first job of a full-back is to defend.
"With the greatest respect to PSG, what Pochettino did the other night, I felt he kept his full-backs deep and let Mbappe, Di Maria and Neymar go on the counter and he was quite happy to play that way.
"England have got enough players in forward areas so, especially against better opposition, I think they've got to defend.
"You know something? There's a case he won't be in it - there's a better chance he won't be in it - but I think he should be in the England squad."
