Ally McCoist makes Sir Alex Ferguson claim as Rangers legend gives reason Manchester United boss wasn't perfect

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has joked that Sir Alex Ferguson's decision not to sign him is proof even the greatest managers make mistakes.

The Ibrox hero was a youth player at St Mirren and Fergie used to give him a lift to training while he was manager at the Paisley club.

Ferguson left St Mirren in 1978 and McCoist started his career at St Johnstone but he then had a successful career at Rangers after a spell at Sunderland.

He spent 15 years at Ibrox as a player before ending his career at Kilmarnock but despite his fine goalscoring record and his history with Ferguson, the Manchester United great never made a move to take him to Old Trafford.

Admittedly, United did have the likes of Eric Cantona, Teddy Sheringham and Mark Hughes scoring goals during that time but McCoist was still surprised.

When asked about the trips, he joked on talkSPORT: "When he was manager at St Mirren he used to pick me from school. I used to go to school in East Kilbride and Fergie used to live in East Kilbride. I went to school up at Hunter High.

"Another lad, Stevie Cowan, he used to live up the other side of East Kilbride and Fergie used to pick the two of us up and take us over to Paisley.

"And we would train with the 15s and 16s and Fergie would take training with the first team and the reserves.

"Then we would hang on, wait until training was finished with the first team and Fergie would drive us back home to East Kilbride.

"Great memories, fantastic memories but I don’t remember him not talking to us.

"No, I mean to be fair he’s probably the greatest manager that has ever lived out of this country but it just goes to show you, he could still make mistakes."

Freddie Flintoff laughed and responded: "You’ve not lost your touch Ally."
