Ally McCoist makes Rangers 'intent' claim as he reckons Steven Gerrard's side didn't expect to beat Bayer Leverkusen

Rangers legend Ally McCoist admits he was disappointed to see his former club bow out of the Europa League after a 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen on Thrusday.

The Light Blues struggled at the BayArena as Moussa Diaby scored the only goal of the game, his side already 3-1 up from a first-leg win at Ibrox.

And the club's record goalscorer wasn't unsure if Steven Gerrard 's men ever believed they could overcome Leverkusen to set up a return to Germany for the quarter-finals.

Speaking on BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra, McCoist said: "I'm not sure I'd go as far as a white flag.

"It certainly looked to me as if there was an expectation that they wouldn't be hanging around Germany, shall we say.

"Make no mistake about it, they're playing a good team, a side that could win it, I don't think they will but they could.

"There was no real intent from Rangers, I didn't think. It's that first first five or 10 minutes you're looking.

"I was on the radio and I said for Rangers to have any chance they have to score first. My co-host immediately piped in, 'yes, and second, and third'.

"It was then I was thinking, 'do you know something, he's probably quite right!'

"Make no mistake, it was a massive task but looking at the start of the game I was a little bit disappointed that Rangers didn't show any intent to get themselves back in the tie."
