Ally McCoist in Rangers lower league flops 'nowhere near Ibrox' jibe as he revisits emotional title journey

Emotional Ally McCoist has praised the players who dropped to League Two with Rangers - even though he admits they shouldn't have been at the club.

The Ibrox legend stayed on as boss as the Glasgow giants dropped down to League Two and rebuilt the squad in the lower ranks.

With the club lifting their first league trophy since those dark days, McCoist has reflected on scrambling for players just days before the season kicked off.

He has thanked the players who contributed to the climb through the ranks - despite the side being below the usual quality of the champions.

He told Sky Sports: "All the good people who worked at the club through that time, some of them lost their jobs through it, and all the players, players who came and played in the Second and Third division.

"To be honest with you, they would normally be nowhere near Ibrox, but I'm forever grateful to those guys who helped on the journey which has culminated in Steven Gerrard and his team doing a fantastic job this season.

"Congratulations all round, and yes it is emotional, of course it is.

"I'll never forget it, we had a game against Brechin on the Saturday and we had six players turn up.

"When you think about it, Rangers Football Club effectively having trials for players, that's one of the reasons I will be eternally grateful to those players, and we all should be, but it's a day for the fans."
