Ally McCoist in Kemar Roofe Rangers goal marathon as Ibrox legend forced into honest confession

Ally McCoist says he's now watched Rangers striker Kemar Roofe's stunning goal 39 times.

Footage of Roofe beating Standard Liege keeper Arnaud Bodart from inside his own half has gone viral, with Piers Morgan saying it "might be the greatest goal ever scored" and Portuguese outlet Goal calling it "a work of art".

Roofe's manager Steven Gerrard said it was "the best goal I've ever seen live with my own eyes", and Ibrox legend McCoist admitted none of the 355 goals he scored for the club were of the same standard.

The 58-year-old's son quizzed him after the game as to whether he'd ever notched from such a distance, to which he confessed to never tracking back far enough to try.

BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra host Darrell Currie asked McCoist how many times he's watched the goal so far, to which he replied: "Aww what a goal. Aww, at least, I think at the last count it was 39, Darrell.

"I came back in from the game (Celtic v Milan) at Celtic Park and my two boys were still up, and my wee boy Aaron was talking about it Darrell and he said to me: 'Dad, have you ever scored a goal like that?'.

"I said: 'Honestly son, I haven't, but to be fair I was never in my own half'. What a goal it was.

"It was absolutely brilliant. I thought initially, the way he kept the ball, he was going to get a free kick and get Rangers up the park, effectively just see the game out, but you see him have a little look out the corner of his eye, and it's brilliant, it really is.

"One of the best, well, it must be some goal for Steven Gerrard to say it's the best goal he's ever witnessed live at a football game, would tell you the quality of the goal."
