Ally McCoist in Jamie Vardy Rangers transfer quip as he reveals the 'unbelievable' cash reality that blocked Ibrox move

Ally McCoist has revealed he tried to bring Jamie Vardy to Rangers - but quipped the England striker did well to steer well clear of him.

The former Ibrox boss admits the "absolutely unbelievable" financial situation at the club stopped him snapping up Vardy while he was at lowly Fleetwood Town between 2011 and 2012.

The striker has since gone on to star for Leicester City in the Premier League and on the international stage with the Three Lions.

But it could all have been very different for the 33-year-old had he been lured to Glasgow under McCoist's stewardship.

He concedes it was a transfer that never got off the ground.

"I remember looking at him when he was at Fleetwood and I was at Rangers," he told talkSPORT.

"I couldn't get the money to get him.

"I had John Brown, my chief scout, look at him two or three times. It was an absolute no-brainer but we couldn't get the money to get him.

"He's been fantastic.

"We couldn't get the money at that time, it was amazing. And we weren't talking a lot of money, it was unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable.

"That's just more the position our club was in at that particular time, to tell you the truth.

"Thankfully for Jamie, he made the correct decision and never let me anywhere near him."
