Ally McCoist in fan return confession as Rangers legend baffled by 'farcical' lockdown rules

Baffled Ally McCoist admits he has no idea when fans will return to SPFL stadiums as he lamented "farcical" lockdown rules.

Rangers and Celtic face a veto over proposed supporter test events after Nicola Sturgeon announced on Tuesday that some coronavirus restrictions were to be reimposed in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The decision followed a rise in Covid-19 cases in Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire linked to household gatherings.

Rangers' home clash with Dundee United had been earmarked as one of three pilot fixtures to trial the phased return of supporters on September 12.

But with restrictions on home visits to remain for at least two weeks, a Holyrood spokesperson revealed on Thursday that test events won't be considered in the area until they are lifted.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist was quizzed over when grounds will be opened up to punters north of the border again after a limited crowd was granted entry to Brighton's friendly against Chelsea at the weekend.

The Rangers legend laughed as he recalled watching a particularly "bizarre" situation unfold on the news.

He said: "She's shut down Glasgow, she's shut down West Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire.

"It's absolutely bizarre. I was sitting watching the news last night and there was an old couple and the boy's saying, 'I can't visit my daughter'.

"And it's a tragedy, right. I'm not kidding you on, she lived 30 yards away but her boundary was in North Lanarkshire and he was in Glasgow.

"The whole thing's becoming farcical.

"In answer to your question, I don't know when we're going to get punters back in the stadium!"
