Ally McCoist in David Hagen tribute as Rangers icon remembers 'great, great lad'

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has paid a touching tribute to David Hagen following his former teammate's passing at the age of 47.

The hugely-admired former Gers and Hearts star lost his brave fight with motor neurone disease on Friday after being diagnosed in 2018.

Hagen turned out for Falkirk, Clyde, Livingston, Peterhead and finally Bo'ness United during a storied career in the Scottish game.

And McCoist moved to remember a player who he shared a Rangers dressing room with during the club's charge towards Nine In A Row under Walter Smith.

The 57-year-old posted on Instagram: "Devastated to learn of the passing of David Hagen, as such a young age, so cruel.

"I can still picture him walking into that dressing room as a fresh-faced kid.

"A talented young player and he had to be to break into that Rangers team, which wasn't as easy thing to do.

"But as well as being a fine footballer, most of all he was just a great, great lad with a lovely manner about him.

"My heart goes out to his family and close friend. Rest in peace, David."

Rangers reacted to the tragic news with a poignant message on Friday night.

It read: "Rangers Football Club is saddened by the news of the death of former player, David Hagen.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the wider family circle at such a difficult time. Words cannot express, nor provide comfort, for a family during these circumstances.

"David will be remembered for his part in the famous Nine in a Row side and featured in the amazing 1992-93 season when Rangers won the treble and came within one game of the Champions League Final."
