Ally McCoist in Celtic fan quip as Rangers hero compares popularity to public enemy No.1

Rangers icon Ally McCoist has revealed he sensed his waning popularity among Celtic and Hibs supporters during Sunday's Premier Sports Cup Final.

The 59-year-old is football royalty and has earned a mammoth following on social media due to his never-ending enthusiasm for the beautiful game.

But he told Celtic -supporting cricket legend Brad Hogg he was struggling to win over a bumper Hampden crowd made up of fans from Rangers' Premiership rivals.

And he even joked he was as well received as the man leading the England cricket team amid their doomed Ashes quest against Australia.

Speaking on his talkSPORT breakfast show, McCoist joked, "Last time we spoke, you did inform me that your allegiances in Scottish football leaned towards the Celtic end.

"I offer you my congratulations mate as Celtic won the League Cup.

"I was working at Hampden on Sunday, it was Celtic vs Hibs, there was 50,000 there and I was as popular as Joe Root on Bondi Beach.

"Just to give you an indication of how things were going."

The Ibrox icon made the most of his media duties on Sunday as he channeled his inner Kirk Hammett, as he showed off his air guitar skills when Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' played before the start of the second half.
