Ally McCoist in brutal Rangers admission he pinpoints 'major reason' for Gio's struggles

Ally McCoist admits Rangers are "out of their depth" in the Champions League - and blames a failure to replace summer departures.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst 's side have lost all five of their group stage fixtures in a group that contains Napoli, Liverpool and Ajax. With one game left to play, they run the risk of becoming the tournament's worst-ever team ahead of the Dutch champions' visit to Ibrox next week. McCoist could pick out only two positive spells from the quintet of bruising beatings and reckons Rangers just weren't prepared for European football's biggest stage.

Van Bronckhorst lost the likes of Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo during the summer but Ibrox legend McCoist is adamant they haven't been adequately replaced despite an extensive summer recruitment drive. He observed that Rangers of this season lack the physicality of the team that stormed to last season's Europa League Final.

McCoist told BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra: " Rangers have looked out of their depth, that's the fact of the matter. They've looked out their depth.

"They've had, unless I'm mistaken, a good hour against Napoli at home, probably a good 45 minutes against Liverpool at home. Apart from that? You're really struggling, let's be honest.

"It was the worst group ever to be put in. Between Rangers and Ajax they've lost 34 goals in the group stage, it's an indication of the standard of that group. Ajax have lost 10 goals to Napoli, never mind anybody else."

He continued: "I genuinely believe Rangers have lost excellent players with an extremely strong physicality about their team, and they haven't replaced them. I actually think that is one of, if not the major reason, the form hasn't been anything like last season.

"I'm not just talking about Europe, it's domestically as well because Rangers haven't played well domestically, although they've been hanging in."
