Ally McCoist in Ben Davies Celtic transfer dig as Rangers hero insists defender has 'dodged a bullet'

Rangers hero Ally McCoist reckons Celtic's missed target Ben Davies has "dodged a bullet" as he looks set to move elsewhere.

Preston defender Davies was expected to sign at Parkhead on an initial pre-contract to finally end the club's search for a new centre-back with Christopher Jullien injured and Shane Duffy badly out of form.

However Liverpool have swooped in as they are no longer prepared to pin their title hopes on having Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk back before the end of the season, while Joel Matip has consistent injury problems of his own.

Neil Lennon lamented his club were "gazumped" on the final day of the window but McCoist reckons Davies is a lucky man for dodging a move to the champions.

He told Sky Sports' Transfer Show: “It looks to me, and it has looked to me for the last five or six weeks, it looks like there’s half-a-dozen at Celtic that don’t want to be there.

“Whether it’s Ntcham, guys like that. Ajer I think will move on, it looks like he wants to move on.

“Edouard will move on at some time.

“In normal circumstances I would have said yes, it would be a good move for Ben Davies.

“He’d have been going to a fantastic football club, playing far more regularly you would think than when Gomez and van Dijk are fit and back into the side.

“Normally, yes, it would be a good move. But there could be a train of thought that he’s actually dodged a bullet.”
