Ally McCoist hits out over Hibs fan 'stupidity' as Rangers hero in 'marred' Hearts derby verdict

Ally McCoist has hit out over the 'stupidity' of some Hibs fans after Alex Cochrane was targeted with missiles during the Edinburgh derby.

The Easter Road club have launched an investigation into the shocking scenes as TV footage and pictures showed the 22-year-old being pelted with objects, including a portion of chips, during the 1-1 draw in Leith. Rangers hero McCoist says it is a shame that the showdown will now be marred by the action from the stands rather than on the park with the talkSPORT host labelling the encounter as a 'proper' game.

Hearts took the lead through Lawrence Shankland and his strike looked to have secured the bragging rights in the capital, but Martin Boyle climbed off the bench less than 24 hours after re-joining the club to strike in the final seconds of added time to spark wild scenes amongst the players and fans in the packed out stadium. But despite the incredible end to the game, McCoist reckons that will be overshadowed by the scenes from stands.

Speaking on the talkSPORT breakfast show, he said: "Listen, it never ceases to amaze me, the stupidity of some fans, throwing a cigarette lighter in particular man, that could take somebody's eye out or need stitches. It's a shame because it was a proper game yesterday, a good game.

"I think [Hearts boss] Robbie Neilson will be a little bit more disappointed than the Hibs contingent because they seemed to dominate most of the game. They took a 1-0 lead through Lawrence Shankland then Hibs equalised literally - literally! - with the last kick of the ball through Martin Boyle.

"Robbie will be disappointed but at the same time it's just stupidity from these fans. And surely it's not that difficult to pick them out with the cameras that are at the game? Just go get them and ban them.

"Throwing things onto pitches, I thought we were by all that. It's a shame because the Edinburgh derby is a proper derby, I've been to three or four in the last four or five years and I really do enjoy the atmosphere.

"It's a good, good game whether it's at Tynecastle or Easter Road. It's a shame it's been marred by that."

Speaking after the game, Hibs chief executive Ben Kensell said: "We can't condone it but obviously sometimes the passion of what happens and the situation and how it unfolds dictates some of that.

"Obviously there are things we need to look at. We would ask our fans to always act appropriately. There are a few incidents we will look at post-match.

"Ultimately, the passion is what football is all about.

"We have to address then internally and we will.

"But ultimately it has got to be a safe environment here at Easter Road and I believe it is."
