Stunned Ally McCoist hit out at "crazy" Alfredo Morelos after the Rangers star appeared to aim an elbow at Dundee United's Mark Connolly.
The Ibrox star was booked by referee Steven McLean but McCoist insists the striker was lucky to escape a red.
He clashed with the United defender just 12 minutes into the Premiership clash at Tannadice.
Rangers legend McCoist was left flabbergasted by the incident.
He said on Sky Sports: "Oh, dear me. There's no words to describe that, it's just foolish.
"We've gone 12 minutes and he's got another 78 to go and he's on a yellow card.
"I don't know if you know, he has got previous. You might not be aware of that.
"It's crazy, it's absolutely crazy. It could've been a red, it could've been.
"What it's also done is give Steven Gerrard a problem. Can he trust him for the remaining 78 minutes?
"We've seen what's happened with Fred at Manchester United and Lewis Ferguson at Aberdeen vs St Mirren.
"They pick up an early booking and they end up getting sent off in the second half.
"It gives Steven Gerrard a problem he doesn't need."
