Ally McCoist hails Celtic 'genius' as he opens up on derby day humiliation

Rangers legend Ally McCoist had a stellar record against Celtic, but he admits one player left him utterly bamboozled.

The former striker holds the record for Old Firm goals, having struck 27 times against the Parkhead club.

But while he was part of a Rangers team that won Nine In A Row, he admits he was left with egg on his face after an encounter with Paolo Di Canio.

The striker was never capped by Italy during his playing career, and having seen his talent up close at Celtic that's something that McCoist finds hard to fathom.

He said on TalkSPORT: "I'm surprised by that.

"He was a brilliant player, Di Canio. I mean BRILLIANT.

"I remember he took a corner at Ibrox, and I was on the front post.

"It went back out to him, and I ran out. Out of an act of stupidity I was the first one out to close him down!

"He's the only guy who's gone by me and I didn't have a clue what happened.

"Honest to God, I actually thought: 'what happened there?' and he was away by me.

"He was a genius, Di Canio. I thought he was a terrific player."
