Ally McCoist gives honest 'no malice' verdict on Bruno Guimaraes' semi-final red card

Sky Sports commentator and former striker Ally McCoist has said that he can sympathise with Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after he was sent off against Southampton in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg win.

The Brazilian was shown a straight red card after a horrific tackle on Saints winger Sam Edozie saw VAR intervene in the decision following referee Paul Tierney's original decision to only show him a yellow card.

But while McCoist could see how bad the challenge was, the former Scottish international highlighted that he understands that it's simply a mistimed tackle and not an intentional challenge while on commentary.

"There’s no real surprise, it’s probably the third free-kick he’s given away in four or five minutes, he got a talking to from Paul Tierney after the second one. Ooh it’s a sore one, dear me. Oh dear. No [it does not look good].

"The first thing you’ve got to say is that it’s mistimed, that’s genuinely what it is. I don’t think there’s any malice in it - that’s not to say he won’t get a red card for it. [Sam] Edozie takes a touch really well, takes it away from the opponent, forces the challenge - yep, I think he’s away. I think that’s a red card.

"I don’t think this will be received too well. I do have a degree of sympathy for Guimaraes because I genuinely don’t think he means it - there’s no way he means it - however, it’s very dangerous and it could very easily have resulted in a broken ankle for Edozie.

"He’s unhappy. Can’t have a problem at all with the decision. In fact he’s very fortunate that he doesn’t break his ankle. Don’t think he means it, but it’s a straight red."
