Ally McCoist gives 'can improve' verdict on Leeds United-linked World Cup breakout star

Leeds United summer transfer target Cody Gakpo has continued his incredible form for PSV Eindhoven straight into the World Cup after scoring three of the Netherlands five goals so far in the tournament.

However, former Scottish international and talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist believes he can still improve and that he isn't 'the finished article' just yet.

Gakpo was very close to joining the Whites in the summer transfer window but the deal between clubs broke down at the last minute and he stayed in the Eredivisie on the advice of Dutch national team boss Louis van Gaal.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist argued that while he understands Gakpo's goal return is fantastic for both club and country, he's still got a ways to improve.

"I don't think he's the finished article by any stretch of the imagination - I don't think he's a young boy either, he's 23! He scored a header against [Edouard] Mendy, but Mendy made a bit of a mess of it.

"His second goal was his best goal [of the tournament], a left-footed strike against Ecuador, absolutely incredible strike and he takes his goals very well.

"He's talented. He's really talented. I can understand clubs going after him but I can also see improvement in him. It would not be a bad signing but I still think he's not the finished article - improvement is there in him but it'd be a good signing."

Whether McCoist is right or wrong, Whites midfielders Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson will have a tough time stopping Gakpo when they meet in their Round of 16 match on Saturday, December 3rd at the Khalifa International Stadium.
