Ally McCoist excited by the boost 'unplayable' Andy Carroll could give to Newcastle United

Former Rangers and Scotland forward Ally McCoist believes the arrival of Andy Carroll will provide a welcome boost for Newcastle fans.

Carroll rejoined his boyhood club on a free transfer from West Ham United yesterday, eight-and-a-half years after leaving to join Liverpool for a British record fee.

The England international forward has been dogged by injuries in recent years but Newcastle have handed him one-year deal which is heavily incentivised by appearances on the pitch.

Carroll isn't expected to feature until mid-September as he recovers from ankle surgery but McCoist is excited to see him in action.

He dubbed the 30-year-old as 'unplayable' on his day and compared him to former Newcastle forward - and McCoist's former international team-mate - Duncan Ferguson.

"I love that," McCoist told TalkSPORT.

"I just want him to stay fit. You couldn't get two different players but he is a bit like Jack Wilshere. I just want both of them to stay fit for as long as possible and have a good campaign.

"I like both players, I like both lads. I like the fact that he is away back home to the Toon.

"If they can get him fit it is a real boost to the Newcastle fans and they need a boost.

"He is one of the most exciting strikers when he is fully fit. He is like Duncan Ferguson - almost unplayable.

"He is physical, strong and scores some wonderful goals.

"Hopefully he gets fit and stays fit because what an exciting player he is for the Newcastle fans."
