Ally McCoist doubles down on Celtic and Liverpool title verdict as Rangers legend bangs the drum for 'bigger issue'

Ally McCoist fears the "bigger issue" of relegation is being ignored amid the fierce debate over declaring league titles.

The Rangers legend has doubled down on his verdict that neither Celtic nor Liverpool should be named champions if the campaign cannot be resumed.

Instead, he's banging the drum for clubs at the other end of the spectrum faced with the threat of the drop.

In Scotland, Hearts could suffer if the SPFL call an end to the season, while McCoist pointed to Aston Villa, who could jump four Premier League places into safety if they win their game in hand.

He foresees a massive "can of worms" being opened if seasons are called now.

McCoist told talkSPORT : "It's horrible. Liverpool, in particular, and Celtic, clearly, look as though they're going to win the title.

"The way Liverpool have performed, they've been absolutely first class, a joy to watch. And nobody can say that they don't deserve it.

"But, I'm sorry, I'll stick by my opinion, I don't care if they only need a point.

"The fact of the matter is they haven't won it. It's a disaster, it really is a disaster.

"My opinion is you have to win it. The issue is, and I keep saying, isn't so much champions, it's the other end of the table that is more important.

"If they're going to say Liverpool and Celtic are champions, that's a decision for the association or UEFA to make. But are they going to do the same with the bottom of the league and say: 'That's it finished, you're relegated'?

"Somebody tell me, how can you possibly relegate Aston Villa who have a game in hand and could go four places up?

"It's one thing rewarding somebody for something that hasn't happened, that's one thing. But what is, in my opinion, 100 per cent impossible and cannot happen, you cannot punish somebody for something that hasn't happened.

"I know where they're coming from, I know decisions have to be made and I get it. They're in a no-win situation because if they go along the lines of awarding titles then a lot of supporters, understandably...

"What I'm saying is, Liverpool have been absolutely brilliant this year, brilliant. And do they deserve to win the title? Absolutely.

"But what they deserve more is the opportunity to win the title."

McCoist continued: "The bigger issue is relegation, I keep saying it. Aston Villa could be punished for reaching a domestic cup final against Manchester City, that's where their game in hand is.

"You can't have it both ways - you're going to punish a team sitting in the bottom three for reaching a final?

"I don't know they're going to do it but everybody must be praying UEFA and all the associations around Europe can get their league games finished, because what a can of worms it's going to open.

"As soon as you award Liverpool the title, that's the league finished. You can't award the title then say there's going to be a play-off for the European places between Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Wolves, whoever it is.

"The league has to finish there."
