Ally McCoist calls on Nicola Sturgeon to follow England's fan return lead as icon makes 'riots in the streets' quip

Ally McCoist has called on Nicola Sturgeon to follow the UK government's decision to allow thousands of fans to return to games in some areas.

It was announced yesterday that clubs in tier 1 areas in England will be able to welcome 4000 supporters while tier 2 can admit 2000. No fans will be permitted in the highest tier.

The changes take place on December 2 with the condition that grounds don't exceed 50 per cent of capacity.

Scotland has allowed 300 fans to return in level 1 areas and clubs in the Highlands like Inverness, Elgin and Ross County are currently able to bring small numbers through the turnstyles.

While England has a three tier system, Scotland has five levels of restrictions.

The SFA and SPFL have called for 'urgent' talks to establish a roadmap so that Scotland can move towards returning similar numbers.

And McCoist reckons the pressure will tell on the First Minister with fans all all over the country desperate to return and clubs struggling without the money their tickets provide.

He told talkSPORT: "I think Nicola will give into pressure and follow Boris' lead hopefully.

Adopting a comedy voice McCoist joked: "Fingers crossed because there will be riots in the streets I tell you if we don't get fans back in the stadiums.

He added: "It's long overdue. Because equally you know how passionate we are up here same as the boys and girls down the road.

"So I would be very, very hopeful a sensible decision shall be made and she will follow suit."
