Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne Rangers cup final bust-up explained as maverick midfielder recalls half-time sharpener

Rangers hero Paul Gascoigne has recalled the time he stirred the Ibrox club to a League Cup Final triumph after a half-time drink - before being sent home early by boss Walter Smith.

'Gazza' and his old friend Ally McCoist had a falling out on the park in the 1996 showpiece that carried on into the half-time break before re-emerging from the tunnel to score twice.

The Gers eventually edged Hearts in a 4-3 thriller and both of the Ibrox mavericks were at the double.

But not before an on-pitch bust-up meant they needed separating in the dressing room before Gascoigne was sent to the director's box for a drink to calm down.

Gazza took that instruction too literally and while he may have been the hero in the end, legendary manager Smith insisted he play no part in the celebrations that followed.

In conversation with his old team-mate McCoist on talkSPORT, Gascoigne explained: "In the dressing room I was shaking next to you. I thought you were going to whack us!

"I was like, 'sorry Coisty, sorry, sorry.'"

The tension was so high that Gascoigne was urged to head for a drink before returning, but the maverick midfielder didn't have Lucozade in mind.

He continued: "I thought, 'ooh, lovely'. I went into the director's box, had a treble brandy and thought, 'that's nice, I might have another one.'

"I went on the pitch, the first goal I caught that a beauty. I put a proper bend on it because he was a tall goalie.

"It was just one of those games where I thought I can't do anything wrong.

"I thought, 'this is going to be the time where I get a chance to win a cup final and actually be there and not in a hospital!'

"I remember afterwards in the celebrations and Walter Smith says, 'you're going home'.

"I wanted to celebrate but he said, 'no, you've already had your drink!'"
