Ally Dawson dead at 63 as Rangers legend and Scotland international passes away

Former Rangers captain and Scotland internationalist Ally Dawson has died, aged 63.

Dawson, a defender during his playing days, was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame having spent 12 seasons at Ibrox from when he was signed aged 16 by legendary manager Jock Wallace.

He would go on to wear the armband for the club towards the end of his time in Govan, winning six major honours including winners' medals in the League Cup and Scottish Cup before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in 1987.

Dawson also featured under 'Greatest Ever Ranger' John Greig during his stint as Rangers manager and would also play in the early stages of Graeme Souness' tenure.

All five of his Scotland caps were won at Rangers and after retiring he went on to manage Hamilton Accies, where he won the old Third Division.

A Rangers statement read: "Rangers Football Club are today extremely saddened to hear of the passing of former player Alistair 'Ally' Dawson at the age of 63.

"The thoughts of the directors, staff and players of Rangers are today with the family and friends of Ally."
