Alli and Bale in, big Kane call - The Tottenham team Jose Mourinho should pick vs Stoke City

Carabao Cup football is back on the agenda for Tottenham on Wednesday evening as they face Stoke City.

With the first few rounds of the cup taking place in September just to try and fit everything into the 2020/21 football calendar, Spurs have only played once in the competition so far after Leyton Orient had to forfeit their round three tie due to positive Covid tests.

A penalty shootout win over Chelsea in the previous round clinched a spot in the final eight of the competition and now Jose Mourinho's men will be intent on reaching the semi-finals with victory at Stoke.

The game will give the head coach the chance to shake things up in terms of his team with a busy week on the agenda and he is likely to do exactly that.

But who could start for Tottenham at the bet365 Stadium?

We’ve asked our Tottenham writers at football.london to give their thoughts on who should be in Mourinho's XI to face the Potters. Here is what they had to say:

Rob Guest - Tottenham Hotspur reporter

Mourinho has tended to have two different sides for the Premier League and Europa League but he has already admitted that his XI is likely to be a mixture of the two.

Some players such as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane could do with a breather by dropping down to the bench, while there are plenty on the periphery of the side who are desperate to come in.

Dele Alli should be one of those having not made the matchday squad on Sunday against Leicester City, with Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez, who have also not played a lot this term, also deserving of a chance to show the boss what they can do.

Gareth Bale, Lucas Moura and Carlos Vinicius should all come in, while Tanguy Ndombele may get the nod again after Giovani Lo Celso came off injured against Leicester.

The team is still strong enough to advance to the semi-finals of the competition, although Kane and Son could be called off the bench in the second half if required.

Robert Warlow - Content editor (London and South)

With Spurs not in action until the evening of Sunday, December 27, Mourinho could field a strong side as he goes in search of a semi-final.

I would still expect him to make a few changes, though.

Hart could get another opportunity in goal, and Mourinho may choose to change his full-backs, with Davies and Doherty coming into the side.

With Tanganga out injured and Sanchez out of the picture at the moment, he could continue with Dier and Alderweireld at the heart of the defence.

I would be surprised to see too many changes further forward though, with the League Cup providing a realistic opportunity for silverware for Spurs.

As such, Son and Kane could both start, with Vinicius, Lucas and Bergwijn options from the bench.

Lo Celso is a doubt, so Bale could come in for a start.

Warlow's team: Hart; Davies, Dier, Alderweireld, Doherty; Hojbjerg, Sissoko; Son, Ndombele, Bale, Kane.
