Allen Robinson says extension discussion remains in ‘very minimal stage’

Bears general manager Ryan Pace would prefer to reward his own players rather than look outside at free agency, as evidenced by recent contract extensions for safety Eddie Jackson and inside linebacker Danny Trevathan.

Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has even hinted that he could be re-signing with Chicago.

But there’s one player that, while currently under contract for 2020, Pace needs to prioritize re-signing: Receiver Allen Robinson.

Robinson has been one of Pace’s best free agent signings, providing stability on an offense that stumbled its way through the 2019 season. In his second year with the Bears, Robinson caught 98 passes for 1,147 yards and seven touchdowns.

But perhaps more impressive was that Robinson was able to put together an impressive season with questionable quarterback play and a slew of offensive deficiencies.

“He’s a good player and does a lot for our team on and off the field and he’s a guy we’d like to have a Bear for a long time,” Pace said back at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Robinson said that there has been conversation about an extension, but he wouldn’t call it contract “talks.” At this point, discussion about a possible extension remains in a “very minimal stage.”

“I can’t speak on any news,” Robinson said, via the Chicago Tribune. “It’s still early in the offseason. For me, I don’t get myself too hyped up or too wound up about that. I’m just preparing myself to get healthy and better going into next season.”

Robinson has made it clear that he wants to remain a Chicago Bear for the rest of his career. Now, it’s up to Pace to lock down the Bears’ biggest offensive weapon for the long term.
