Allen Garfield dead: Beverly Hills Cop II star dies of coronavirus aged 80

American actor Allen Garfield has died this week at the age of 80 after contracting deadly coronavirus.

The star of Beverly Hills Cop II and The Conversation was found dead after picking up the infection at his nursing home.

His sister Lois Goorwitz confirmed the sad news and explained his death was due to complications from COVID-19.

Allen had been living at the Motion Picture Television Fund Home – a care home for retired actors - at the time of his death.

Six residents have so far tested positive for coronavirus, along with four staff.

Allen was most famed for his roles in The Conversation, The Candidate, The Stunt Man and Nashville.

In his most famous role, the actor also played the angry police chief in Beverly Hills Cops II.

The Hollywood star had a history of suffering with strokes.

His Citizen Cohn co-star James Woods shared some kind words on Twitter.

He wrote: "Allen and I were friends from our earliest days as actors. We finally got to do some great work together in Citizen Cohn, where he played Abe Feller, a victim of ruthless Roy Cohn and the blacklist.

"He was superb. This is a heartbreaker. RIP Allen Garfield."

Kevin Smith added: "This has hit me hard, emotionally. One of the only fan letters I ever received from a professional was sent by Allen Garfield.

"He mailed me a beautiful, handwritten message 20 years ago to say how he was impressed he was with Chasing Army. Meant the world to an artist just getting started."
