Alleging harassment by cops, BJP activist kills self in Telangana

HYDERABAD: A BJP activist who had attempted suicide by consuming poison at a local police station in Khammam on Thursday, died at a hospital in Hyderabad on Saturday. He had accused the police of foisting false cases against him. Following his death, angry BJP workers protested in the city and scuffled with the cops.

Twenty-six-year-old Sai Ganesh, who was a member of BJP's mazdoor sangh, had on Thursday gone to the Khammam III town police station after consuming poison. Police officials first shifted to a local hospital. After his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to a corporate hospital in Hyderabad, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Sai was charged with making objectionable comments on social media, including hurting religious sentiments among other charges. BJP activists alleged that Sai died because of police harassment. They alleged that the cops had opened a rowdy-sheet against him on the instructions of district TRS leaders.

Police officials, however, denied the charge claiming that cases against Sai were registered based on merit. "Sai was facing nine different cases registered between 2019 and 2022. In the past few days, we had not filed any cases against him. On Thursday, he voluntarily came to the police station. He informed our staff that he had taken poison after which we sifted him to a hospital," Khammam commissioner of police Vishnu S Warrier said.
