Allegiant by Veronica Roth - review

Veronica Roth, Allegiant (Divergent, Book 3)

I am a huge fan of the Divergent series. A MASSIVE fan. Beyond belief. I absolutely loved Divergent. And I absolutely loved Insurgent. But I was in agony when I thought I had to wait to get Allegiant but then, behold, a friend loaned it to me! And I have just finished reading it. And I'm so sorry, but Veronica Roth, you can do so much better. Which is why I would like to deliver the rest of this review as an open letter to Veronica Roth. Apologies for spoilers.

Dear Veronica Roth,

I am a huge fan of your book trilogy Divergent. Like I stated in the above, I loved Divergent and I loved Insurgent. And I was in genuine agony when I had to wait for about three months before someone kindly loaned me Allegiant. By far the longest of the three, with the final page number being 524, but sadly the worst out of the three as well.

Just in case you didn't remember the main outline of the novel… Tris is still factionless along with Tobias/Four and the others, and a new power is rising against the factionless and their leader Evelyn: the Allegiant. Gradually, it becomes apparent that what is happening is a civil war just waiting to him, so the group of former Dauntless leave the city's walls and end up in the Bureau, which becomes their home. The Bureau then tells the group that they were actually in a city called Chicago, their entire life was an experiment monitored by the Dauntless' cameras and that Tris's mother was actually sent in by the Bureau to regulate something, but she fell in love with a citizen and ended up with the Abnegation family that Tris and Caleb are part of. The book ends in Tris doing the unspeakable.

You want the good news? I liked the fact there was a plot twist. Bad news? It was a bad plot twist.

Many a trilogy have disappointed me with the final book, where the author has to find a way of wrapping up the series but exhausted all the interesting things in the first and second book (I'm looking at you Suzanne Collins…), and I'm afraid Allegiant fell victim to the curse.

Sadly, I struggle to find anything positive to say about this book. I can only say negatives. First off, why the profanity, Veronica? You introduced Matthew and clearly he needs to wash his mouth out, because he changed the feel of the book. There is little explanation of the settings, the storyline, despite the 524 pages, was too rushed and too simple for the number of pages it fills.

I will end this letter with a positive. I liked the fact that there was continuity between all three books and that the details were paid attention to. Unfortunately, as I believe I've outlined in the above, the negatives outweigh the positives in this book.

Veronica, you can do so much better.

Yours Sincerely,
