Alleged robber nabbed at airport with cash in luggage, police say

A man wanted over an aggravated armed robbery in Tasmania has been arrested as he tried to board a plane to Melbourne with cash in his luggage.

The 33-year-old man from Midway Point was arrested at Launceston Airport on Sunday afternoon, attempting to leave Tasmania under a false name, with some of the stolen cash in his luggage, police said in a statement.

Police said shortly before 2:00am on January 31, two hooded men broke into the Lauderdale Tavern, east of Hobart, and demanded cash from a staff member on-site.

One of the offenders was believed to have been armed with a firearm.

Police said the staff member did not sustain any physical injuries during the robbery.

The 33-year-old man has been charged with a number of offences relating to the Lauderdale robbery and has also been charged with a second count of armed robbery, relating to an incident that occurred in Seven Mile Beach in June 2019.

The 33-year-old's alleged accomplice at the Lauderdale robbery, a 41-year-old man of no fixed address, was arrested at Seven Mile Beach, east of Hobart, on Saturday afternoon.

Police said he was found in possession of a sawn-off shotgun they allege was used in the Lauderdale robbery.

He has been charged with aggravated armed robbery, aggravated burglary, possessing a shortened firearm and possessing a firearm without a licence.

Both men have been detained in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.

Police thanked "members of the community for their help", but said detectives would urge anyone with information to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au.
