Alleged road rage incident sees driver accelerating towards group of protesters before physical altercation with peaceful demonstrators

A man has been caught on camera driving his car towards a crowd of protesters in Swansea.

Footage shows the driver then become verbally abusive and physically aggressive.

An eyewitness also alleges the man spat in the face of one of the protesters.

The group of 70 cyclists which included members of Extinction Rebellion, Greenpeace and other environmental campaigners, started a cycle from the Uplands area at 10am on Monday, July 6.

Part way through the socially-distanced ride, at around 11am, the group had to leave the cycle path and join the traffic on Oystermouth Road because of construction work near to the LC leisure centre.

When they stopped at a red light a man driving a black Mercedes tried to weave between the cyclists, including small children, before becoming physically aggressive and verbally abusive.

Richie Saunders, who was part of the protest and recorded the incident on a headcam, said: "Basically the guy came out of nowhere along the central reservation.

"He came at such a speed it was shocking. I went on a peaceful protest and nearly got killed, I was shaking after.

"I've seen some things on the road cycling in my time but this was the worst I've seen, the guy was out of control."

Mr Saunders said that the man got out of his car three times, pushed one of the riders and spat in another's face.

The protesters were aiming to highlight a perceived lack of commuter cycle routes in Swansea, calling for more 'pop-up' cycle lanes to be added to the city's roads.

There were a number of children cycling on Oystermouth Road at the time of the incident.

"We were riding at a social distance and we got to the traffic lights and stopped. The adults were protecting the kids, shielding them.

"He actually made contact with some people and pushed them out of the way with his car. He zoomed off down Oystermouth Road and god knows what happened after that, he was still shouting at people down the road," Mr Saunders added.

After the incident, the protest carried on and finished at Swansea's Guildhall.

Another person on the protest, Nick Guy, added: "I was a marker at the back of the protest. The majority of the cars were really courteous, beeping and waving at us but the one in the minority is this black Mercedes who was abusive."

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "We received a report of an assault which happened at about 10.45am this morning by the LC2.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should contact 101 quoting occurrence 2000238570."
