Alleged rapist and abductor of backpacker pleads not guilty

Gene Charles Bristow was charged over the alleged abduction and rape of a European backpacker.

A 53-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to the alleged abduction and rape of a European backpacker at his property in South Australia's Lower Lakes region earlier this year.

Gene Charles Bristow appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, where he denied one count of detaining the woman against her will at his Meningie property on February 9 and 10, and three counts of rape.

Magistrate Elizabeth Sheppard committed him to stand trial in the District Court after his lawyer conceded there was a case to answer.

It is the first time Mr Bristow can be publicly identified, following the statutory suppressions on his name and image lapsing on him being committed to the higher court.

The missing woman was found in Murray Bridge two days after her family in Europe contacted South Australian Police expressing concern for her welfare.

She had allegedly travelled to Murray Bridge after placing an ad on Gumtree looking for farm work.

During an unsuccessful bail application, the prosecution rejected claims by Mr Bristow's lawyer labelling the woman's allegations as a "copycat complaint" inspired by the Salt Creek backpacker attacks.

Mr Bristow, who has been in custody since his arrest, was ordered to be arraigned in the District Court on February 2.

He will stand trial at a later date.
