NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A medical student at Mahidol University suspected of drugging his Pomeranian puppy to death has reported to Pho Klang police in Muang district to hear animal cruelty charges filed against him by the provincial livestock office.
Pol Lt Col Pichai Cherdchu, deputy chief investigator at Pho Klang police station, said that Phattarapong Songsapku reported to officers at about 8.20pm on Saturday in response to a second police summons.
Mr Phattarapong, who was accompanied by his family and a lawyer, was charged with animal cruelty before being released. He was not detained because a warrant had not been issued for his arrest.
The student declined to give a statement to police, saying that he would testify in court only.
The police will summarise the case before forwarding it to the prosecution for consideration, Pol Lt Col Pichai said.
Pol Maj Mongkol Kupsirirat, the Pho Klang police chief investigator, said he expected to file the case with prosecutors in early October.
Mr Phattarapong, a sixth-year medical student at Mahidol University, is suspected of killing his pet Pomeranian by feeding it several blood pressure pills en route to an animal hospital in Nakhon Ratchasima early this month in order to claim insurance benefits.
