Alleged murderer said mate became 'demon'

Mathew Flame told police he'd taken too much MDMA and thought Angry Anderson's son Liam was a demon. (AAP)

The man accused of murdering rock star Angry Anderson's son rambled about Satan before telling police "I was possessed last night, it sounds like I am crazy".

Recordings of conversations between police and Mathew Flame, made hours after he violently attacked his best friend Liam Anderson, were played in the NSW Supreme Court jury on Thursday.

The apprentice plumber tells police he had taken "too much" MDMA and his friend became a demon who "was really angry with me".

The 22-year-old has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental impairment to the bashing murder of Mr Anderson in November 2018 at Queenscliff on Sydney's northern beaches.

The Crown contends he was psychotic at the time due to his voluntary ecstasy use, while the defence says he was labouring under the severe mental illness of schizophrenia.

An American tourist told the jury of seeing an emotionless assailant repeatedly stomping on the bloodied head of his victim in the beach reserve.

Constable John Kennedy testified on Thursday that he was the custody assistant when Flame was brought into Manly police station at about 7.10am on November 4, 2018.

He continued to ramble about Satan, saying things like: "I am innocent, Satan doesn't want you to do this" and "are you going to disobey Satan".

"You have no right to keep me here says Satan, I am innocent, you deserve torture," Flame said.

"You lied to Satan, you can't disobey Satan.

"He is not happy you are doing this especially to Mathew Flame."

Later on, he told the constable: "Man you would not believe my night, are you seriously a real person?"

The trial is continuing before Justice Richard Button.
