The alleged mastermind of an assassination attempt against conservative presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has been caught in Colombia, according to local police.

Concretely, authorities said that Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, also known as "Chipi" or "Costeño" was apprehended in northern Bogota.

Charges against the man include attempted aggravated homicide; trafficking and carrying firearms or ammunition; and using minors to commit crimes, considering the material author of the crime was a 14-year-old.

The incident took place on June 7 when Uribe was giving a speech. The gunman opened fire from behind, wounding him in the head. He has been hospitalized ever since and undergone several surgeries.

The minor, in turn, has been held in preventive detention and charged with attempted homicide and illegal possession of a weapon. Due to his age, the suspect faces a maximum sentence of eight years under Colombian juvenile sentencing laws, El País reported.

Overall, five people have been apprehended in connection with the crime. Asides from Arteaga Hernandez and the minor, known as "Tianz," a person coordinated the logistics, another drove a car transporting the perpetrators, and a woman carried the gun then used for the shooting.
