Alleged housebreaker sent home from court after turning up while infected with coronavirus

An alleged housebreaker was sent home from court - after turning up while infected with Covid-19.

Andrew Cowan was due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Friday for two pre-trial hearings.

But he told security staff at the building that he had tested positive for the deadly virus on Thursday - despite government guidelines around self-isolating - and was sent on his way.

The details emerged when the cases against Cowan, 52, called in his absence.

Defence solicitor Amy Spencer said: "He attended at court this morning and told the court security guards that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

"Unsurprisingly, he was not allowed in.

"He is pleading not guilty to the indictments."

Cowan, of Renfrew, faces six housebreaking charges, a charge that he intended to commit theft, and a charge of breaching bail conditions across his two court cases.

Sheriff David Pender adjourned his cases until March, for further pre-trial hearings to take place, and continued his bail.
