Alleged hoax kidnapping on video call lands Maitland woman in court

A WOMAN will face court on Wednesday after an alleged hoax kidnapping in the Hunter this week.

Police will allege the 20-year-old was on a video call with relatives about 10.40pm on Tuesday when she was handcuffed and appeared to be held against her will by a man.

The call was terminated and her relatives contacted police.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter and Newcastle began making inquiries. That investigation led them to a hotel in Maitland's High Street, where police found the 20-year-old and another woman about 1.30am on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old was subsequently arrested and charged with conveying false information that a person/property is in danger.

She was refused bail and will face Maitland Local Court.

Police said their inquiries into the whereabouts of the man seen on the call are ongoing.

He is described as of caucasian appearance and between 160 and 170 centimetres tall with a solid build, brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
