A Burbank man is a facing a murder charge in connection with a shooting last year in Chicago Lawn that left a 41-year-old man dead.
Cook County prosecutors say Irwhyn Sanchez, 26, served as the getaway driver for the shooter, who has not yet been charged, in the killing of Jose Luis Islas on Dec. 21.
After driving the shooter from the scene, the two men then went back to Sanchez’s home in the southwest suburb to order a pizza, prosecutors said during a hearing Thursday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
About 2:20 p.m. that day, Sanchez was driving the shooter in his wife’s gray Nissan sedan when the shooter saw Islas and another person standing at a corner and told Sanchez, “Look at those sheisty-ass motherf-----,” prosecutors said.
Sanchez then drove around the area and let the shooter out behind the two men as they walked in the 6000 block of South Fairfield Avenue, where the shooter approached Islas and spoke to him in Spanish, prosecutors said.
When the man answered in Spanish, the shooter opened fire at Islas, striking him four times, and then ran back toward Sanchez’s car while the man who was with Islas ran away, prosecutors said.
Islas died a short time later at Christ Medical Center of his wounds, the Cook County medical examiner’s office reported.
Prosecutors said the vehicle Sanchez was driving, which was registered to his wife, was captured by video surveillance cameras, and cellphone records track Sanchez picking up the shooter earlier in the day and the two men traveling together to the scene of the shooting and back to Sanchez’s home.
Sanchez was taken into custody Tuesday while driving the gray Nissan and gave a video-recorded confession, including telling investigators that he knew the shooter intended to target a Satan Disciples members in the area.
An assistant public defender for Sanchez said he has three children and works at McDonald’s while taking classes at Daley College.
Judge Charles Beach set Sanchez’s bail at $200,000 and ordered him onto electric monitoring if he posts bond. His next court date was set for March 16.
