A middle-aged man with a violent history has been granted bail the day after he allegedly punched a Sydney police officer in the jaw and obstructed a paramedic, a court has been told.
Collaroy Plateau man Luke Armfield, 49, consumed so much alcohol on Monday that paramedics were called to assist him at his home about 5.40pm.
The paramedics, and police accompanying them, attempted to assist the man, before he allegedly attempted to assault a paramedic and then punched Constable Kyle O'Dwyer in the jaw and chest.
The man was restrained after being capsicum-sprayed.
He was treated at Northern Beaches Hospital before being charged with assaulting police occasioning actual bodily harm, resisting arrest and three other offences.
Armfield's extensive criminal history, current enrolment in an alcohol abuse program and alleged causing of "significant injury" to Const O'Dwyer were factors in a police sergeant remanding him in custody overnight, court documents show.
But magistrate Robyn Denes, hearing about Armfield's alcohol issues on Tuesday in Manly Local Court, agreed to release the accused man on the condition he live at his flat and not consume alcohol or any other drug unless it's prescribed by a doctor.
The case is next due in court on September 21.
