Alleged driver involved in fatal hit-and-run pleads not guilty

A 25-year-old Hobart man has been remanded in custody to face trial for manslaughter in the Supreme Court over a hit-and-run.

Vanessa Hayward, 42, did not survive the crash which occurred at the intersection of Pirie and Roope streets in the Hobart suburb of New Town about 9:00pm on June 22.

The two occupants of the other car — a grey Magna sedan — fled the scene.

Police allege the driver was Zach Muir-Bennett and arrested the Gagebrook man almost two weeks later.

Muir-Bennett is accused of failing to take reasonable care and precaution to avoid danger to human life, because he was allegedly speeding, not keeping a proper lookout and failing to obey a stop sign.

Muir-Bennett today pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

He has been remanded in custody to stand trial in the Supreme Court in September.
