NSW Police’s Joint Counter Terrorism Team has confirmed that it has charged alleged Bondi shooter Naveed Akram, 24, with 59 offences over Sunday’s terror attack.
After waking up from a coma in hospital, NSW Police confirmed that Akram had been hit with 59 charges for his alleged involvement in the Bondi attack.
The charges include 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of causing wounding/grievous bodily harm to a person with the intent to murder, discharging a firearm with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, cause a public display of a prohibited terrorist organisation’s symbol, placing an explosive in/near a building with the intent to cause harm, and committing a terrorist act.
Police are set to allege in court that Akram engaged in conduct that caused death, serious injury, and endangered life to advance a religious cause and cause fear in the community.
“Early indications point to a terrorist attack inspired by ISIS, a listed terrorist organisation in Australia,” NSW Police said in a press release regarding the charges.
Akram is expected to face court in a bedside hearing this afternoon.
Akram, alongside his 50-year-old father Sajid Akram, has been accused of opening fire at Bondi’s Chanukah by the Sea, an event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah, leading to the deaths of 15 people.
Akram was injured while his father died during a police shootout ahead of their arrests.
The incident, which has officially been declared a terrorist attack, is Australia’s worst mass shooting in 29 years.
