Alleged baby killer 'at risk' in custody

A man made no application for bail after facing court charged with murdering a three-month-old girl. (AAP)

A NSW man accused of abusing and murdering a three-month-old girl is likely at risk of self-harm, a court has heard.

The man, 24, made no application for bail on Thursday after facing Maitland Local Court charged with murdering the girl on August 4.

Magistrate John Chicken marked the court papers "Request immediate assessment by RIT (Risk Intervention Team) inmate likely at risk of self harm".

Detectives arrested the man on Wednesday after extensive inquiries into the girl's death.

Emergency services found the girl unresponsive in a unit in Newcastle suburb Hamilton South about 10.40am on August 4.

She was declared dead in hospital soon after.

The man, who AAP has declined to name as doing so may identify the child, also faces a charge of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10 years.

Mr Chicken adjourned the case until February 10 to allow prosecutors to serve the brief.
