A 61-year-old man has been charged with starting a fire at Cherry Gardens earlier this year which destroyed two homes and burnt through 2,700 hectares of land

Police have charged Gregory John McGannon, from Hallett Cove, with 12 counts of intentionally causing a bushfire and 10 counts of property damage.

The fires were discovered on Hicks Hill Road at Cherry Gardens, Mathews Road and Mount Bold Road at Bradbury and Dorset Vale as well as Cut Hill Road at Kangarilla just after 4pm on January 24.

Mr McGannon is already in custody accused of a starting fire on Piggott Range Road at Clarendon on the same day, while the Cherry Gardens fires burned uncontrolled about 10 kilometres away.

He will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.

The fires destroyed two homes, 19 outbuildings, two vehicles and scorched 2,700 hectares of land.

Fire crews managed to save 60 homes that came under threat.

The blaze was contained the following day after heavy rain improved firefighting conditions.

Mr McGannon was charged over the Clarendon fire after patrols allegedly spotted him speeding away from an ignition point on Piggott Range Road.

He was charged with causing a bushfire, driving unlicensed, engaging in a police pursuit, drink driving and defacing number plates.

Police say their investigation is ongoing and ask anyone who may have seen a small white car in the area of Cherry Gardens, Dorset Vale, Bradbury, Clarendon and Kangarilla between 3pm and 6pm on January 24 to contact Crime Stoppers.
