Allan Saint-Maximin says Newcastle United 'can make history' in the FA Cup

Allan Saint-Maximin has revealed how desperate he was to avoid a penalty shoot-out against Oxford United.

The French star smashed home the winner after beating two defenders and firing home in stoppage time.

But he spoke of his eagerness to get through without the added stress of penalties.

He said: “With penalties sometimes you win sometimes you don’t. That’s why we spoke about it and said don’t go there.

“We couldn’t have lost it after going 2-0 up. That’s why I did everything to win.”

United reached the last 16 for the first time in the Mike Ashley era and the French ace didn’t need to be reminded about the importance of the FA Cup.

Former Nice ace Saint-Maxmin added: “We all know how important it is. Now we have to move on to the next game and win that.

“We must keep going for our fans. I know we can make history. That’s why we must prepare well and play West Brom.

“We must take the cup seriously.”
