Allan Saint-Maximin's amusing response to joke of Lionel Messi taking his Newcastle United shirt

Allan Saint-Maximin has been jokingly asked what he will do when Lionel Messi asks for his No 10 shirt at Newcastle United - and the Frenchman responded that he would 'wake up' because it was a dream.

Saint-Maximin has proved a big hit on Tyneside since completing his £16.5m move from Nice last summer and while his talismanic performances have made him a firm fans' favourite, the 23-year-old's quips and GIFs on social media have also endeared him to supporters.

The forward again amused supporters on Twitter when he was asked by Newcastle fan Jonny Sharples 'what he was going to do if Lionel Messi asked for the No 10 shirt?'

Messi, of course, has been linked with a big-money move to Man City, PSG and Juventus after the Argentina superstar stunned the football world and asked to leave Barcelona earlier this week.

But just as Sharples' tongue in cheek question went down well with Newcastle fans - it was liked by 1,800 users - Saint-Maximin's four-word reply also made them smile.

Saint-Maximin's simple response - 'I will wake up' with the shrug emoji - generated 4,800 retweets and was liked by more than 62,000 accounts on Twitter.

We are not sure just yet what Messi makes of it, but Federico Fernandez has already joked he will ask his compatriot to join him at St James' Park.
