Newcastle United have been rocked by the absence of Allan Saint-Maximin from their pre-season clash at Rotherham United.
The winger has been omitted due to an "illness" according to United although the club could not confirm any specific details or whether it was Covid-related.
It meant that Steve Bruce fielded Matt Ritchie straight back into the side after a knock while Dwight Gayle also started.
Bruce also named Freddie Woodman in goal for the first-time with his loan move to AFC Bournemouth currently on hold.
Senior stopper Mark Gillespie was also back on the bench while Euro 2020 participants Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth were also subs.
Bruce included youngsters Jack Young, Joe White and Matty Bondswell on the bench too.
