Allan Saint-Maximin reveals his careful road back to fitness after hamstring hell

Allan Saint-Maximin is hoping that his hamstring problems are behind him after taking extra care on his latest comeback from injury.

The French winger could easily have been withdrawn towards the end of the 1-0 win over Chelsea, but he was strong enough to battle on and set up the winner for Isaac Hayden.

United's summer signing from Nice has now played his part in eight victories in his 13 appearances for the club.

Saint-Maximin said: "I'm really happy because everybody in the team worked a lot.

"I was out for a month and I'm back with a win against Chelsea.

"We did a great job against a really big team.

"I worked a lot and done a lot for two weeks on my hamstring.

"We don't want it to happen again.

"I'm really happy to do 90 minutes and make one assist when we've won."

Saint-Maximin lifted the lid on his rehab after going down with a hamstring injury four weeks ago.

The Frenchman added: "I could have came back earlier but I told the coaches maybe it was better to take time.

"I said I'd play for 90 minutes and said I'd show them something.

"I made an assist and I'm really happy."

Newcastle had to fight for the points against Chelsea and Saint-Maximin admitted it was tough.

The winger told NUFC TV: "It's difficult because even for the strikers we didn't get much action.

"When you get a chance you have to score.

"And it's about what you do in the 94 minutes."
